KRIYA language Cedilla: ç La cédille The little hook ¸ added under the letter c in French is a diacritical mark known as a cedilla, une cédille. The letter c with the hook ç is called c cédille. The sole purpose of the cedilla is to change a hard c, pronounced [k], to a soft c, pronounced [s]. In French, the pronunciation of the letter c is determined by the letter that immediately follows it, as explained in the "hard vs soft" section of the vowels lesson. So when c is followed by a hard vowel but needs a soft pronunciation, add the cedilla and voilà ! the c is soft. On the other hand, since c is already soft in front of e, i, and y, it cannot and must not take a cedilla there – even if a related word has one. read less

The cédille goes under the letter 'c', when you want it to have a soft "s" sound, and not the harsh 'k" sound. example: français.

Salut ' mon - sieur Oscar , with grand gesture I incline to amplify your answer . The vide Cedille or Cédiha sign i;e -- ' ç ' is a unique phonetic sign in espacially in French , Portuguese language .Due to pronunciation it is as the combined utterance of half ' s with half c ' .While , the solely vowel --- o,u,a are inserted before or immediate after of the consonant c , then the vide c sounds like ' ca as ka cu as ku .... ' etc . But apropos the syntax we have to maintain the prime c or s sounds through c . So, to skip or avoid the false k sound , we have to put the cedille ç instead of c. exempli gratia as ---- la lange française , le garçon , la façade ,le façon , en sequi......... Addition to the answers by other experts, I would like to explain the following. One must know why these exists in French. Any accent and special characters in French, for example, accent grave, tréma, accent circonflex: they all are here to regulate the sound of the alphabet which in turn regulates the sound of the word. The accents, word formation, sentence structure, deciding the vowels, alphabet positioning, word order, etc. are few factors which influence the sound of any language. Every language has a unique sound to it and every language takes enough effort to make sure the sound of that particular Language isn't tampered. That's how these accents and special marks came into existence. Hope I have done justice to what I intended to say. Merci beaucoup. read less
