The present indicative is used in many ways.

  • To make a general statement and to describe ongoing action in the present. For example-Valerie parle à son ami Ludvic.

To express a close future.For example- Il part demain soir.

  • To express a habitual action.For example- Tous les jour, le Soleil se lève.
  • To describe a past action closely connected to the present.For example À peine rentrés et les problèmes commencent dèja.
  • To express a historical fact.For example- Flaubert publie Madam Bouvary et c'est la scandal!
  • To express an action in the process, être en train de+ the infinitive form of the verb is used. For example- Je suis en train de Parker à Rémi.

One more use of the present tense : depuis. The present is used to express an action that began in the past and continue in the present. For example-J' habite à Nice depuis trois ans.

To ask a question about the duration of an action, use depuis quand or depuis combien de temps..  Example- Depuis combien de temps  habites-tu à Nice?
