But if you understand scales I'll give a explanation :- Essentially the Carnatic system of music recognises the base pitch based on the keys on a standard harmonium in which the white 1 or C is referred to as 1 or 1 Kattai, black one after the white one is C# or 1.5 kattai and so on.
