Electric machine is a general term for electric motors and generators. They are electromechanical energy converters i.e. an electric motor converts electrical energy in to mechanical energy whereas a generator converts mechanical power to electrical output.

An Electrical machines is broadly classified in to two types:-

I) Static Machines  and II) Rotating Machines

In static machines Refers to stationary machines i.e., transformer which may be single or three phase transformers.

In dynamic machines refers to both DC and AC Machines.

DC Machines refers to both DC Motor and Generators.

AC Machines refers to synchronous and asynchronous machines.

Synchronous machines referes to both synchronous motors and synchronous generators

Asynchronous machines refers to induction motors which may be single or three phase (based on rotor construction they are squirrel cage and slip ring induction motor).
