At any point in history there will be the need for people from various different countries to have a common language so that they can engage in trade and diplomacy and communication, among other things. During the 16th century it was Spanish, later it was French, and now it’s English. To a large degree this is a historical accident: the British empire was so far-flung that it brought English to many parts of the world and provided a lingua franca. Also, the economic and cultural power of the United States has been a huge factor in the spread of the use of English.

It has nothing to do, however, with any supposed superiority of the English language. Every language has its own strong points and weak points, and English is no different. Any language can be used to say pretty much anything.
