Valency of Carbon:

The valency of carbon is 4.

This means that carbon has 4 electrons in its outermost shell and needs 4 more electrons to achieve a stable configuration (like the noble gas neon). Therefore, it can form 4 covalent bonds with other atoms.

2.

Property of Carbon that Leads to Long Chain Compounds:

The key property is called catenation.

Catenation

:

Catenation is the ability of carbon atoms to bond with other carbon atoms to form long chains, branched chains, or rings.

Why does carbon show strong catenation?

  • Small atomic size → strong C–C bonds
  • High bond strength → stable carbon-carbon covalent bonds
  • Tetravalency → can form stable bonds with up to 4 atoms, including other carbon atoms
