A covalent bond is a bond formed between two atoms through the sharing of electrons. The shared electrons are termed as SHARED PAIR.
This type of bonding is necessary for carbon as it gives rise to the property of catenation. Catenation is the formation of long carbon-carbon chains that form different substances (compounds). For example, diamond and graphite are formed from the catenation of carbon atoms. It is present in carbon atom due to the tetravalency of carbon.
