My teaching experience 12 years

Both are Indian classical dance , both are involved around Hindu temples, based on mythological stories and their images are still carved on the ancient temples such as Khajarao, tanjore and so on. Both dances have much more abhinaya (expression)

Bharatnatyam is south Indian classical dance that originated around state of Tamil Nadu.Kathak is Northern Indian classical dance that initially start in Hindu Temple.Kathak is from stories of Radha and Krishana .Bharatnatyam is based on tales of Shiva.

In Kathak Performer is used standing posture in performance and very less hip movements.

In Bharatnatyam the performer use  many mudras and sitting or knee bent  posture and hip movements.
