It exists ln 3 forms one is meso form which optically inactive due to internal compensation.

The neccesary and sufficient condition for optical activity is that molecule should not contain the following symmetry elements i.e i) plane of symmetry ii) contre of symmetry iii) alternate axis of symmetry. Tartric acid has optally ativity in one configuration. in other configuration it doen't have optical activity due to presence of plane of symmetry. we have both optically active tartric acid as well optically inactive tartric acid. read less

If any symm. element is present then compound is not optically active. In tartaric acid there is plane of symmetry in b/w which divides the molecule into two equal halves thus making it a meso compund and hence optically inactive. read less
