Why is Tartaric acid not optically active despite the presence chiral carbon atoms?

It exists ln 3 forms one is meso form which optically inactive due to internal compensation.

Tartric acid has optally ativity in one configuration. in other configuration it doen't have optical activity due to presence of plane of symmetry. we have both optically active tartric acid as well optically inactive tartric acid. read less
