Assume a small mass placed at centre. As both forces from left and right are equal and opposite it stays in equilibrium because both masses are same and distance between them is also same. Assume a small mass placed at centre. As both forces from left and right are equal and opposite it stays in equilibrium because both masses are same and distance between them is also same. Suppose mid point mass is slightly displaced towards left and release , it goes towards left direction Because as u slightly displaced towards left , gravitational force from left sphere is increases because distance between them decreases ,as force inversly proportional to square of distance between them. Hence it is unstable equilibrium because it cannot back towards it's equilibrium position. read less
