Eccentricity is define as the ratio of the distance of any point on a conic section from a focus to its distance from the corresponding directrix and it is denoted with "e"; e range from 0 to 1; 0 < e <1.

The eccentricity is always denoted by e. e = (the distance of a point on a conic section from the focus ) / (its distance (that point on the conic section) from the directrix). When e = 1, the conic is a parabola; When e 1, it is a hyperbola.

A circle has an eccentricity of zero, so the eccentricity shows you how "un-circular" the curve is. Bigger eccentricities are less curved. At eccentricity = 0 we get a circle for 0 1 we get a hyperbola for infinite eccentricity we get a line.
