Let us take an example to explain the concept of Consumer Equilibrium: Suppose, Mr. A has a monthly budget of Rs.2000/- for telephone use. He has a land line connection and a mobile phone. Each has separate advantages w.r.t call rates and mobility. Now how much to recharge for each, will be decided by many factors like, his duration of stay at home, his duration in transit and other intangible and tangible social issues. Thus, Mr.A has to come to a compromise every month on how much to recharge for each. This state of achieving an optimal contentment by balancing varied variables on the consumer's end is what is called as Consumer Equilibrium. read less

When consumers make choices about the quantity of goods and services to consume, it is presumed that their objective is to maximize total utility. In maximizing total utility, the consumer faces a number of constraints, the most important of which are the consumer's income and the prices of the goods and services that the consumer wishes to consume. The consumer's effort to maximize total utility, subject to these constraints, is referred to as the consumer's problem. The solution to the consumer's problem, which entails decisions about how much the consumer will consume of a number of goods and services, is referred to as consumer equilibrium. read less
