You know that elements are made of atoms and atoms are made of electrons protons and neutrons you identify an element by the number of protons and neutrons (electrons can vary depending on charge ) Now assume that I have some lead and I need to convert it into gold how do I do it ? Just remove some protons and neutrons and I have another element remove the exact no of them so I have the same number of protons and neutrons as in gold. now I have made gold How do I remove them? You know that the nucleus of the atom is not affected by chemical reactions . only a nuclear reaction can do affect the nucleus . transmutation is this conversion of one element to another by using nuclear reactions. Scientists have made new elements in a nuclear reactor by this method in the periodic table you will find some artificially made elements . These were made by transmutation by the addition of protons or neutrons. read less
