Without a standard measure of weight, in this case an ounce, you wouldn't know exactly what you are paying for. People figured out that they needed standards of weight and measure, as they are called, in the earliest of civilizations so that everyone would understand what they were getting when they bought something. Similarly, when performing chemistry practical experiments, measurement of each chemical is critical for the success of the experiment (like mol, ml). In practical life as well, measurement is of utmost importance. Another example, if a new recipe that you wud have just learnt mentions half teaspoon of salt an an ingredient, and you add 1 tablespoon of it, the dish may turn out real freak. read less
