But in longitudinal waves, oscillations are parallel to the direction of propagation of wave. Sound waves propagate as lonitudinal waves in air. But in solids, it can propagate as transverse waves also. But the question here is not clear. As I understand, it is TYPES of SOUND waves. An immdeiate answer can be w.r.to the audible frequencies. If that is the reference, there are three types: Infrasonic sound (frequency less than audible range), audible sound and ultrasonic soud waves (frequency greater than audible range). read less

Sound waves are longitudinal waves and not a transverse wave. It needs a material medium, elastic in nature, to travel. Depends on the frequency of sound wave it is arranged in three types. Infra sonic, audible and ultra sonic Audible sound is between 20 Hz and 20000 Hz.
