Lattice Method:

In Mathematics, the topic multiplication has many methods. One of it is Lattice method.

Practice Sum 1:

  • 21 × 6
  • Steps to multiply:
  • The number 21 is formed by mixture of two numbers i.e. 20 + 1.

So, we can form a table as:

×  20
6 120 6
  • Now, we have to multiply 6 × 20
  • Answer is 120.
  • Now, we have to multiply 6 × 1
  • Answer is 6.
  • Now we have to add the two boxes of the product that we have got.
  • In other words we have to add the boxes having numbers 120 and 6.
  • So, 120 + 6 = 126.
  • So, our answer is 126.
  • Therefore, 21 × 6 = 126.

Practice Sum 2:

  • 45 × 12
  • Now here, we have to follow the same procedure but twice.
  • The number 45 is formed from two numbers i.e. 40 + 5.
  • And the number 12 is formed by 10 + 2.

So we can make a table and solve the sum:

× 40 5
10 400 50
12 480 60
  • Multiply 10 by 40 and 5.
  • Again multiply 12 by 40 and 5.
  • So we get the product in the remaining 4 boxes.
  • So add the 4 boxes i.e. add 400 + 480 + 50 + 60.
  • We get the final answer as 990.
