In this chapter, you will study the natural resources available on earth and their importance in sustaining life on earth. As we all are aware, earth is the only known place in the universe where life exists. This is because; earth has valuable natural resources in the form of water, air, sunlight and minerals to sustain life. Life is possible on earth due to the combination of the lithosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere. However, during the course of time, these natural resources are getting depleted and polluted due to man-made activities. In this chapter, you will study these natural resources and how they make life possible on earth.
14.1 The Breath of Life: Air
14.1.1 The role of the atmosphere in climate control
14.1.2 The movement of air: winds

14.4.3 (i) The greenhouse effect
14.4.4 The oxygen-cycle
14.5 Ozone layer
Section 14.1 – In this section, you’ll learn why earth’s atmosphere makes it conducive for life to exist on earth, how earth’s atmosphere prevents us from extreme heat, how the movement of air leads to the diverse atmospheric phenomenon, the formation of rain and increasing pollution in the air.

Section 14.3 – In this section, you’ll acquire knowledge about what is soil and how it is formed, factors or processes that make soil, composition and importance of soil, how the quality of soil affects life on earth and what is the effect of flowing water on the topsoil.
Section 14.4 – In this section, you’ll learn what are biochemical cycles, what is water cycle, what happens to water during water cycle, what is nitrogen cycle, the importance of nitrogen in sustaining various life forms, what are nitrogen-fixing bacteria, what is carbon-cycle and oxygen-cycle and what is greenhouse effect.
Section 14.5 – In this section, you’ll study what the ozone layer is and its importance in protecting life on earth. You’ll also learn why the ozone layer is getting depleted at a faster rate.
