The word 'cardboard' in the poem denotes the photograph that was clicked by the poet’s mother’s uncle. This photograph had been clicked when the poet was twelve years old. She had gone to a beach along with her two cousins, Betty, Dolly and uncle. She had enjoyed the sea holiday very much. This photograph remained with the poet after her mother’s death. The poet often got sad, looking at the photograph pondering over the mystery of death. This word has been used to mean lifeless cardboard having her mother’s picture. Her mother was dead, and the cardboard was life-less. The cardboard picture could not make up for the loss of her beloved mother. read less
