The English language originated from the Anglo-Frisian dialects and was brought to Britain by Germanic invaders in the 8th and 9th centuries AD. The earliest forms of English were spoken by the Anglo-Saxons, who settled in England in the 5th century.2 The Anglo-Saxons were a mix of Germanic tribes from Scandinavia and Germany and brought with them their own language, which was called Old English.0 English evolved by crossing boundaries and through invasions, picking up bits and pieces of other languages along the way and changing with the spread of the language across the globe. The origins of the English language lie in today's England and the arrival of Anglo-Saxon tribes from Central Europe to the British Isles in 400 AD.1 read less

11years experienced as an English teacher

No one actually "invented" English. It gradually evolved as a language separate from other West Germanic languages like German, Dutch and Frisian sometime after the 5th century CE. It was during this time that tribes of Angles, Saxons, and Jutes began migrating across the North Sea into England.
