The atomic number is calculated by calculating number of protons in an element. example, in a sodium atom, there are 11 electrons and 11 protons. Thus the atomic number of Na atom = number of electrons = number of protons = 11.

Be the better version of yourself

Atomic number is determined by the number of protons present in the nucleus of an atom. The atomic number is equal to the number of protons in an atom. For example, hydrogen has an atomic number of 1 because it has one proton. Similarly, carbon has 6 protons in its nucleus so its atomic number is 6.

ATOMIC NUMBER IS DENOTED BY Z.
FOR H-ATOM,Z=1
FOR He-ATOM,Z=2
FOR Na-ATOM,Z=11
--->For different elements, the value of Z is different.
--->Z is also equal to the no. of electrons in an atom but it is not always true because in case of ions(anions and cations)the no. of electrons are not equal to no. of protons.
