When any vehicle moves, the luggage carried over its roof also gets the inertia of motion and inertia of direction due to the motion of vehicle. Now, when driver applies brake to stop the vehicle, the vehicle comes to rest but the luggage carried over its roof continues to posses the inertia due to which it may fall forward or sideways. So to prevent any damage the luggage is tied with rope over the rooftop of any vehicle. read less

Newton's first law: Any object tends to stay in its state of rest, or (constant speed) motion. So, the luggage tends to slide backward, or forward when there is a sudden change in the speed of the vehicle slowing down, or speeding up respectively. Tying the luggage up makes sure that this slip doesn't...

When a moving bus suddenly stops, the luggage on its roof tends to continue in the state of motion due to inertia of motion. Hence the luggage fall down from the roof of the bus. Similarly, when a bus suddenly starts, the luggage on the roof of the bus tends to continue in the state of rest and hence...
