As non-native speaker, you should begin learning Spoken Chinese Language first and then if you are interested or if your work demands it you can start learning reading and writing part. Spoken Chinese language is taught using English alphabets and this system is called "PinYin". Reading and writing part includes memorization of Chinese characters (han zi). Well. Like any other language Chinese has also got consonants and vowels. First we need to learn the pronunciation of each word. Then as we go ahead we will learn how to form characters. I believe you are aware that Chinese is a symbolic language. So for forming a character we need to learn some writing rules and basic strokes to form the character. When you learn this and practise. You will be able to write characters. After this, we need to Learn the 4 tones of Chinese language. Every word has 4 sounds or tones. As their tones change its meaning and character also changes in the process. So we need to understand the same. Then we can start learning new vocabulary and phrases and then some part of Grammer. Characters , we need to associate the meaning pictorially to the character which makes the learning more interesting. Ofcourse a lot of listening will improve your language. Chinese is a scriptural langauge and hence difficult. Also Chinese language are of two types - Mandarin ( Mainland China based )and Cantonese (Hongkong based). Most widely spoken is Mandarin. Since it is scriptural language, it is difficult to go directly go onto the scriptures. Hence comes the discovery of Spoken Mandarin where the scriptures are converted to english alphabets and words for ease of learning. Also there is no grammar followed the way you follow in English, Spanish or any such European language. To start with I suggest to learn Spoken Mandarin and gradually go onto scriptures. You can join a class or better hire a tutor who can make chinese learning more intuitive If you are based out of Mumbai, you can reach out to me.
