Although they naturally speak in different languages, the two militaries have worked out a set of rules to facilitate communication by using gestures with military signals and by speaking in simple English. And moreover each respective military will have inter-army liaison and linguists at crucial areas to facilitate communication.

Well the list is long on misconception part-
1. Chinese language is most difficult on its tones.
2.The Chinese language doesn't have grammar / grammar is very simple.
3. Chinese language has no tense.
4. Chinese characters are so difficult to learn because there are no patterns to remember.
5. The Chinese language when spoken lacks emotion or attitude.
The list doesn't end here , but I hope I was able to answer your question in bit and pieces.

Most Chinese have a basic understanding of classical Chinese since it's taught in schools. I think what you're asking is “how far back can a modern Chinese person understand and read classical Chinese without advanced and specialized training." In that case, we can safely say, probably somewhere around 13–14 century. Romance of the Three Kingdoms was written in the 14th century, and most modern Chinese can read the original text without much problem. Modern Chinese can probably read anything from Yuan dynasty (12–13th century). It's not how people speak Chinese nowadays, but it's still mostly comprehensible.

One the facts you don't know is "Chinese is hard even for Chinese people themselves". Chinese grammar check is very primitive and often does not work. Since many Chinese users haven't formed a habit of checking grammar or even spelling while typing in Chinese, they sometimes accidentally write wrong sentences.
