Next step:Once the kid is good in the first step, then the trainer has to introduce the kid with openings(necessary and useful opening with principles and ideas), middle games (like attack and defence, exploiting weakness etc.) and endgames(the area to be focused more for new ones or young ones). For a beginner, the initial aim is to learn the basic rules of the game. Once he/she masters this, the next step is a good amount of practice. I believe that it would, on an average, take 2-3 months for a kid to be ready for the advanced classes. Once he/she moves from beginner to advanced, he/she will be taught all the advanced ideas related to the game. This stage requires good dedication and practice on the part of the student. If all goes well, the student would, in another 4-5 months, be ready to take part in tournaments. The journey doesn't stop there. Once he/she gets a taste of tournament chess, the kid would be thrilled to keep improving further. From that point, the coach would play minimal role of guidance. read less

Chess is a very complex game. For learning necessary skills like knowing about basic rules and moving chess pieces notations takes one month. It's tough to compare to IAS and GM as currently, India has 64GMs and 4500 IAS. It would help if you started at a very young age to become Grandmaster.
