Well, it depends on many factors. The factors are:
(1) The age of the kid (or individual)
(2) The connectivity between the kid (or individual) with trainers( or parents).
The first is to introduce them the chessboard, chess pieces and general rules and movements of the elements.
Next step: Once the kid is good in the first step, then the trainer has to introduce the kid with openings(necessary and useful opening with principles and ideas), middle games (like attack and defence, exploiting weakness etc.) and endgames(the area to be focused more for new ones or young ones). They can also solve puzzles and some recommendations for simple chess books.
