Training will absolutely be helpful, especially if it is focused on your weaknesses. More important is a regular practice from which you gain valuable experience. Playing chess with better players helps in greatly improving your game.

You may learn the basics of chess all by yourself by referring books or online study material. Once you are good at it, you will have to take training from an experienced coach. Coaching and practising , minimum of 2 hours a day will make you real good at it!!

According to my experience, a beginner having logical mind needs about 3000 hours practice to win State Senior level selection Tournament.
