How can I write a socket library in C++ from scratch?

Not sure what OS you are looking at. In case you are on Windows, you can use WinSock API or MFC Socket classes.

How did you learn Java as a C / C++ programmer?

Being a c++ programmer gives good command over OOP, how to define class, inheritance etc. From there to learn basics of Java is to learn the syntax of Java language. Download a simple Jave editor like eclipse and it is easy to learn if you are a C++ developer.

Can I use string instead of char arrays to prevent buffer overflow in C++?

yes, string is good option. it takes for mem allocation. you can always get the reference to char array behind the string class through getbuffer functions

How can I increase the size of a C program (.exe file)?

why do you want to do this? people generally look at reducing the size of the .exe as it offers more flexibility.
