The Tala comprises of THE LAGU ( Beat followed by count of fingers ), THE DUTAM (Beat followed by turn or wave of the palm) and ANUDRUTAM ( just the Beat).....which ae in vogue as of today. The other angas of talam namely, THE GURU, THE PLUTHAM & THE KAKAPADAM have all become extinct and are not being used now. Different Talas have different patterns in which the LAGU, DRUTAM & ANUDRUTAM are to be used. For Ata Talam the pattern is LAGU-LAGU-DRUTAM-DRUTAM. There is no Anudrutam concept in Ata Talam. The number of Aksharas for the Ata talam depends on the type of LAGU used. read less
