The removal or addition of swaras in the original raga gives melody which is the main aim of any music composer. So we can say that the composition will ultimately be based on notes taken from ragas. Without a raga and it's particular swaras, melodic music is not created. read less

In western also Ragas are used. Ragas or Scale are rhythms based on various notes. In Indian Classical Music, it is called as Raagam or Raaga. In western, it is called Scale.
