Is there any reason to use bitwise operations such as 'n<< 1' rather than just 'n * 2'? Isn't the compiler in charge of such optimizations?

Yes, its better to use bitwise operations. But this also depends on the programmers context of use because with modern compilers on modern architectures, there is generally no difference in performance.
