All these materials are classified on the basis of forbidden energy gap between conduction band and valence band. In conductor ,conduction band is fully filled with electrons. In insulator ,valence band is fully filled and does't contribute to create an electric current. In semi conductor, conduction...

In insulator ,valence band is fully filled and does't contribute to create an electric current. In semi conductor, conduction and valence band are partially filled. read less

The material classification is based on two parameters. First one is on the basis of forbidden energy gap between conduction band and valence band. Here the availability of free electrons in the conduction band is the key factor. The second parameter is on Inter Molecular Distance (and the minimum...

The material classification is based on two parameters. First one is on the basis of forbidden energy gap between conduction band and valence band. Here the availability of free electrons in the conduction band is the key factor. The second parameter is on Inter Molecular Distance (and the minimum potential energy) associated with the molecules and hence the electrons of the substance or material. Materials of low thermal conductivity are called insulators, classification is based on order of magnitude. I will give you a similar case ? what is difference between smaller amount and larger amount? Small amount means 1 Rs , 5 Rs etc, medium amount means 50 Rs, 100 Rs , and Large amount means 500 Rs, 1000 Rs currency note. Just like this we give a range a name small from this to this , large from that to that, Materials with small conductivity are usually called insulators. exact value of k - thermal conductivity is required in most applications. Another example you can rate my answer as good , average, bad But how much good than previous answer , for that u need a value , that value is thermal conductivity --- which is rate of heat transferred in watts for 1 m^2 area of the material (let it be a block ) kept under 1 degree temperature difference between the surfaces. read less
