How does strain comes in a bar when it is fixed from both the ends? If strain is produced, does that mean the length of bar is increased when it is fixed?

If we talk about a bar with both end fixed, then strain never come. But there may be a stress for example if you give heat to a bar with both end fixed then compressible stress are there.

In universal testing machine (UTM), specimen is always fixed on both ends but the loading is tensile therefore, one observes axial strain in specimen. In a bar fixed at both ends if we increase or decrease the temperature thermal stress will be induced as the elongation and contraction is restricted at both ends but there will be no thermal strain. Also there can be no tensile or compressive strain in the bar. But due to bending there can be strain induced in the bar because in that case the length of the longitudinal fibres will change above and below the neutral fibre. read less

In my opinion, it can come, but then the assumption made in strength of material of homogeneous, isotropic and prismatic pair will be violated, and it may be because of change of shape due to bending moment.

As the bar has its own weight, when it is fixed on two sports the weight of the bar itself acts as a load to it. Eventually the bar experiences a little contraction in the lateral end and little expansion in the other surface.
