As much as casual observers would like to see big data technologies win the future, RDBMS (the basis for SQL and database systems such as Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB82, Oracle, and MySQL) is going to stick around for a bit longer.

Nope. Big Data (NoSQL) and RDBMSs (SQL) will both thrive in the future. If anything, NoSQL and SQL databases compliment each other.

You should focus on the analytics part of Data Science, and not on big data. Analytics require knowledge of business along with Data Science skills.

It certainly give you benefit. But path is long & not so easy. It dons't mean too long or tough. Take around 6 months of exhaustive learning. You also need to learn some related applications/system for execution.
