If you are coming to Bigdata side (hadoop), day by day our data size increasing in all most all the domains.. like banking, finance, health care, insurance...etc and lot of unstructute data coming into picture and performance becoming more challenge... to provide solutions for these issues hadoop came into picture.. Python is not mandatory for learning spark. But if you have some core Java skills, that will be the add on to learn spark.

It certainly give you benefit. But path is long & not so easy. It dons't mean too long or tough. Take around 6 months of exhaustive learning. You also need to learn some related applications/system for execution.
