The cell cycle is divided into interphase (G1, S, G2) and M phase (mitosis and cytokinesis). Interphase is the period of growth and preparation for division, while M phase involves the separation of genetic material and cell division. Mitosis is further subdivided into prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase.

Interphase:
  • G1 phase:
The cell grows, performs normal metabolic functions, and prepares for DNA replication.

  • S phase:
DNA replication occurs, resulting in two identical copies of each chromosome (sister chromatids).

  • G2 phase:
The cell continues to grow, and energy is replenished in preparation for mitosis.

M Phase:
  • Prophase: Chromatin condenses into visible chromosomes, the mitotic spindle begins to form, and the nuclear membrane breaks down.
  • Metaphase: Chromosomes align at the center of the cell, called the metaphase plate, and the spindle fibers attach to the chromosomes.
  • Anaphase: Sister chromatids separate and are pulled to opposite poles of the cell.
  • Telophase: The nuclear membrane reforms around each set of chromosomes, and the chromosomes begin to uncoil.
  • Cytokinesis: The cytoplasm divides, resulting in two daughter cells.
