PLURAL FORM OF NOUNS

Nouns are used in singular form (one) or in plural form (more than one). In English, most of the nouns make their plurals by adding‘s’ or ‘es’.  In German the plural is formed. Let’s have a look at these ways:

 

  1. Plural form same as the singular form :

Das Fenster       -    die Fenster

Das Zeichen       -     die Zeichen

Das Mädchen    -      die Mädchen

Das Fräulein       -     die  Fräulein

Der Schüler         -     die Schüler

Der Lehrer           -      die Lehrer

  1. Plural Form with ending ‘-n’: ( all the nouns ending with “ -e” take an “ n “ in plural form )

Die Schule            -    die Schulen

Die Lampe            -    die Lampen

Die Brille               -     die Brillen

Die Hose               -     die  Hosen

  1. Plural form with ending ‘-en’:

das  Bett              -     die Betten

das Ohr                -      die  Ohren

der  Student       -        die  Studenten

  1. Plural form with ending ‘- er’:

Das Kind       -   die Kinder

Das Licht      -    die Lichter

Das Bild       -   die  Bilder

  1. Plural form with ending ‘ – e ‘ :

Der Film      -    die Filme

der Tisch     -    die Tische

das Boot     -    die Boote

der tag        -   die Tage

das Telefon  -   die Telefone

  1. Plural forms made only with umlaut :

Der APfel      -    die  Äpfel

Der Vogel      -  die Vögel

Der Bruder    -  der Brüder

Der Garten   -  die Gärten

  1. Plural forms with umlaut and ‘- e’:

Der Stuhl    -   die Stühle

Der Schrank -   die Schränke

Die Nacht     -   die Nächte

Die Kuh        -   die Kühe

  1. Plural  forms with umlaut and ‘-er’:

Das Buch      -   die Bücher

Das Wort     -  die Wörter

Das Haus     -  die Häuser

Das Land   -   die Länder

Der Mann   -  die Männer

  1. Plural form with ‘ –s’. Most of the nouns ending in a vowel make their plural in this way :

Das BÜro     -    die Büros

Das Kino      -  die Kinos

Das Taxi      -    die Taxis

Das Foto     -   die Fotos

Das Sofa     -  die Sofas

  1. Plural form with doubling of the last consonant :

Das Ereignis   - die Ereignisse

Das Ergebnis  - die Ergebnisse

Die Studentin  -  die Studentinnen

Die Freundin    -  die Freundinnen

Die Lehrerin    - die Lehrerinnen

  1. A lot of foreign words in German take special plural forms. Some of these are listed below :

Das Datum     -  die Daten

Das  Thema     -  die Themen

Das Album      -  die Alben

Das Konto    -  die Konten

Das Lexikon  -  die Lexika

Das Museum  -  die Museen

Das Visum       -  die Visa

 

There are some nouns that are used only in the singular form and have no plural form, such as:   das Alter, das Geld, die Zeit, das Glück, die Hitze, die Kälte,der Lärm, etc.

Similarly, there are some nouns that are used only in plural and have no singular form, such as die Eltern, die Kosten, die Leute, die Ferien, die Geschwister, die Lebensmittel, etc.

It is always best to learn the plural form along with the singular. Find out the plural form of a noun with the help of the pointers given above and then learn it.
