Is it wise to change functionality (PHP), CSS or plugins and make it your own code when you are creating a social networking site on WordPress?

BuddyPress seems to be a plugin that helps with setting up a social network on top of WordPress. BP itself supports additional plugins to add up the functionality. In order to add new features to your site, you should create a custom plugin for your site that will have those specific features and you know its your code, you are going to update it yourself when necessary. Modifying 3rd party plugins or theme code is not a good idea. Clearly, when the update is available, your edits will be lost. In themes, you can set up a child theme with functions.php file and add up your own functions so even if you update the parent theme later, your child theme will not be affected. Btw, WordPress is not really a toothpick to setup a house on. However you need strong server and better resources to create a robust social network. Any technology you use, you need strong servers, load balancing, sql replication and many resources. read less
