It's mentioned in the Natyashastra from 200 BC–200 AD. Style Dhrupad is a contemplative and meditative style of singing that was performed in temples and the courts of Hindu and Muslim rulers. Features Dhrupad is a poetic form that's presented in an extended style with precise elaboration of a raga. The exposition before the composed verses is called alap and is usually the longest part of the performance. History Dhrupad was a major form of singing in the medieval period, but declined in the 18th century. It was revived in the 1900s and continues to be performed today. Related traditions Dhrupad is related to the South Indian Carnatic tradition. read less
