The gum-like substance in rosin is applied to the bow in order to generate friction between the strings and the bow. It improves the resonance of the instrument. Without rosin, the bow's bristles would slip and wouldn't be able to rub the strings with enough friction to produce a sound.

Hi, I want to learn to play the violin, and I am not sure which violin to go for as a beginner. I don't have any local shop nearby, so I probably would have to order online. Can someone help with which violin I should buy?

You should always go to the store and check out yourself by playing on different acoustic instruments. Even if they look the same, the sound won't! Play by yourself and pick the one you like.
