As a member of the string family, the violin has four distinct strings, G, D, A, and E. Any of these strings can be sounded (either plucking with a finger or with a rosin-infused horse-hair bow). When done so, a single sound will occur. It is also possible to sound more than one string simultaneously: either two or more strings via finger plucking, or two at a time with a violin bow. You can generally only sound two at a time max with a bow, due to the fact that the bridge and the fingerboard is curved, thus allowing one to sound only one or two strings simultaneously read less
