I would say, u need to have knowledge of music and being a good rasika of music is more than enough to learn any instrument. Bcz if one is passionate and dedicated , that's higher than knowledge.

Find a best teacher first of all. Then buy the wood or fiber veena for the learning and practice

How many months does it take to learn the veena.
You can learn to play the basics in a few weeks - ie. to play sarali varisa, janta varisa etc. If you practise well, you'll be able to play Geethams in few months , say in 6-7 months (if you learn systematically)....
