You have three stages to get through this exam. First preliminary exam in august. In this u have two papers. One general studies paper and one paper of comprehension,aptitude,reasoning etc. In this second paper is qualifying paper with33%. Second stage is main exam. You have nine papers in it. English. An Indian language. Four general studies paper and two optional papers. Finally an essay paper. This exam will be held in December. Once you clear all these papers u will be called for a interview which is the third stage. Once successfully cleared all three stages ul be placed in any of the 24 services under upsc exam, according to your merit read less

On Merit but Option should be there since there are some physical requirement so you may be offered IFS.
