Let’s understand English tenses clearly and systematically.
● What is Tense?
- Tense indicates the time of an action or state—Present, Past, or Future.
- English commonly uses 12 tense forms, divided into four types.
○ Simple ○ Continuous ○ Perfec ○ Perfect Continuous
These are used with the Present, Past, and Future
1️⃣ Present Tense
Simple Present:- Used for habits, routines, general truths and repeated actions.
Example: She goes to school every day.
Present Continuous:- Used for an action happening now or around the present time.
Example: She is going to school now.
Present Perfect:- Used for an action completed at an unspecified time or with a present result.
Example: She has completed her homework.
Present Perfect Continuous:- Used for an action that began in the past and is continuing or has recently stopped, with emphasis on duration.
Example: She has been studying for two hours.
2️⃣ Past Tense
Simple Past:- Used for an action completed in the past.
Example: She went to school yesterday.
Past Continuous:- Used for an action that was in progress at a particular time in the past.
Example: She was studying when I called her.
Past Perfect:- Used for an action that was completed before another past action or time.
Example: She had completed her homework before dinner.
Past Perfect Continuous:- Used for an action that had continued for a period of time before another past event.
Example: She had been studying for two hours before her friend arrived.
3️⃣ Future Tense
Simple Future:- Used for an action that will happen in the future.
Example: She will go to school tomorrow.
Future Continuous:- Used for an action that will be in progress at a particular time in the future.
Example: She will be studying at 8 p.m.
Future Perfect:- Used for an action that will be completed before a particular future time or event.
Example: She will have completed her homework by 8 p.m.
Future Perfect Continuous:- Used for an action that will have continued for a period of time up to a particular future point.
Example: She will have been studying for two hours by 8 p.m.
■■ Easy Way to Remember
Present: happens now, regularly, or relates to the present
Past: happened before now
Future: will happen later
And remember the four forms:
Simple → Continuous → Perfect → Perfect Continuous
