Chemical Reaction

The reaction in which reactants are converted into products is called a chemical reaction.

Eg. C + O2 --> CO2

Reactants

Reactants are the substances that take part in a chemical reaction. Here, C and O2 are reactants.

Products

Products are substances that are formed after a chemical reaction. Here, CO2 is the product.

Why does a chemical reaction occur?

Because the reactant molecules move randomly and collide with each other forming new products. The new products formed may or may not have the same physical and chemical properties of the reactants.

What are the effects of a chemical reaction?

1. Evolution of gas --> Zn + HCl --> ZnCl2 + H2

2. Change in colour --> CuSO4 + Fe --> FeSO4 + Cu (Blue colour of copper sulphate changes to Pale Green)

3. Change in State --> H2 (g) + O2 (g) --> H2O (l)

4. Change in temperature --> Exothermic reaction

 Lets discuss the rest in the coming classes!
