We are at the edge of a major reshuffle in the way businesses will be run. Artificial Intelligence and Machine learning will directly impact a large chunk of jobs done by people. Amidst this melodrama, career growth or career progression is an interesting challenge that professionals today are dealing with. Jeevan, a commerce graduate, was fascinated to see his friends and acquaintances working in multinational set-ups. He was awestruck by the kind of experience they shared, the cuisine they got to relish, the lavish parties they were entertained at and the opportunities they got to interact with westerners. Jeevan, an ambitious you man, hence took a plunge for his first career break with a leading business process outsourcing firm. He accepted the clauses of working in night shifts and was desperate to be part of the happening crowd. Fast forward five years, Jeevan and thousands of young, ambitious professionals are entangled in a web, from where they are unable to free themselves. At work they don't seem to get growth opportunities, barring a meagre salary hike now and then. Age is catching up and so are financial commitments, and they still seem to be struggling to move up the ladder. The organisation has made it very clear that opportunities are not frequent and whenever they happen in the form of an IJP - Internal Job Posting, only the best of the best get the opportunity. More often than not, when it comes to leadership roles, organisations find it easier to hire a ready-made talent from the market rather than giving the opportunity to an internal talent and grooming them. Hence for Jeevan, it is either stay or quit and even if he moves to a different organisation, he gets placed in a similar position, and the cycle continues. So, what do people like Jeevan need to do to avoid falling into the trap? How do they beat the competition, differentiate themselves from the rest and come out as successful professionals?
 
 
1. As you cover a distance of 12 - 18 months in a particular role in your organisation, make your aspirations very clear to your manager

2. Ask your manager to suggest what steps you need to take to help you move to your next best role

3. Identify people who are already in that role you are aspiring for and find ways to connect with them frequently. Seek insights on what methods they applied to achieve what they wanted

4. Focus on your strengths. Realistic aspirations are the key to professional success. Aspire for roles where you can apply your strengths. Your strengths must be known to people, and colleagues must endorse your strengths. It must be so evident that people can bet their money when it comes to your competencies

5. Engage with your HR Business partner at least once a month. Spend at least half an hour with her and understand what shape the organisation is taking, know what kind of opportunities are coming up and check if any particular skills sets are in demand

6. Every 12 months, choose two competencies which you want to develop. This must be over and above your objectives and targets. Make a development plan to develop those competencies. Find someone who can coach you on that competency

7. In your current role demonstrate excellence, work towards being the best team member your manager could have so that his confidence in you will impact his decisions to recommend a promotion

8. Explore support functions like HR, ADMIN, Supply Chain, Finance where you could diversify. It is not engraved on a stone that you have to grow within your line of operations.

9. Look for opportunities when you can take up a small task from your manager. Be it a scheduling task, compiling data for a presentation or volunteering to coordinate an upcoming team meeting, in all these situations remember to bring your strength forward. This where most people stumble, in the excitement to volunteer they pick up responsibilities which will stretch them meaninglessly and does not come close to demonstrating their strengths.

10. Be a spokesperson for the organisation. During breaks, meets and informal gatherings speak good and positive about the organisation and the function you are in. Let people know you as a proponent of the organisation's culture rather than a critique
 
Follow these practices, and I can assure you, you will stand apart from the crowd, be an example to many and come out in flying colours.

Many engineering students have a question ‘what additional skill they should acquire’.

Yes. These days competition has increased. It has become difficult for fresh engineers to get a job. Additional skills add value to resume. But just acquiring a number of skills is not right.

In my opinion during engineering, soft skills are beneficial. Basic computer proficiency is a must as all works go on in the computer. Autocad also helps in any industry.

But many skills should be pursued later when you settle in a job. If you settle in design, then cad can cae is useful. If you are in project management scheduling software like MS Project or Primavera are helpful. Structural design software Stadpro is useful for those going in structural design.

Basic computer languages do help computer engineers.

In your final year engineering, you are not sure which department or which company you are going to work for.

So wait. Get a job, see kind of work you do, and then learn additional skills. During engineering better to focus on learning basics in subjects. Basics help throughout life in your career. In meetings wittiness count. Quick responses are possible if you are clear in your fundamentals.

Learn and grasp the knowledge in front of you and do not just run for some courses which may not be useful for you later.

Studying is a different thing and working after you complete your studies is different. What is it that you are studying for? To earn? To have yourself occupied? You also mention that you have done your BA, looking at it I can suggest you pursue your masters and become a consulting psychologist or take up a diploma course in your preferred stream of the hobby. when we look at time spent in our life a considerable amount of time goes in work & profession. It becomes important to know how do you have planned to spend this substantial amount of time.

We have to make sure how and where and what to select to make a career. To make this choice a bit better it is indeed a good idea to choose a career counsellor. Rather than plunge into what your relative suggestes. It is not necessary that everything the other person has done should be applicable to you. There is no one shoe fit our strategy, it has to be customized. That is why I call my career Team "Career Design expert". Design is required to customize as per the needs of a particular person. Let's look at the qualities and expertise that a career counsellor may have in the new age to figure the future.


1)See that the expert uses reliable and valid tests.

Can you tell someone's future with a fingerprint reader? may be. Don't fall for pseudo testing that happens on a big level. Sometimes testing is not even required. Unless you are doing strength based career choices. Look out for people who conduct tests like DBDA or DAT. Even if it all depends on the interpretation it would still give you results of your ability. Remember, these abilities and results keep changing they are at this particular instance that you have got these results. Don't consider these results as permanent lifelong.

People with no hands have futures too.

2)Don't test only abilities
Abilities is just one part of your personality. you are made up of much more than that. your pattern, your confidence, your flexibility and your relationship with yourself all matter. Don't choose a counsellor who does only one test and jumped the gun. Select an expert who will look at all your strengths. Ensure that the assessment happens in all different levels.

3)career counselling must also be combined with skill counselling

May be you are good at it and one section is good for you. The counselling should not stop here. It should also tell you what must be done About your selection. what must you do more to get the desired results. career comes from the word carrrius (Latin) meaning path way. That is why don't look in the session as a destination giving sermon. Ensure that your counsellor tells you what next 2-3 years will look like the pathway. what to follow, whome to follow, what to read and where to focus in the coming years. Sometime even brief study skill Counselling may also be required.

4) Choose an expert who is updated.
This is challenging but very important. A counsellor may be having a 20 years of experience in career counselling but might not be updated. Many such Counselor keep suggesting a feilds that have no future. Or have less or no demand. one of the factors of career is that the world must need you and you must get paid for it. A premitive cousellor may know your skills but suggest you outdated field.

1) Keep your Question papers and worries aside:

Once you have completed your last paper now you do not control them. Keep all you books, notes and question papers aside. Don't be your own examiner and keep guessing your marks, that is not your job. So let's start working on the factors that we control.

Think what we can do to build a better career graph & future. No matter how high or less you score, this is a new opportunity. A blank Slate. Everything starts fresh and you can make a difference no matter what marks you get.


2) Design Career options that help you stand out

5)Learn unlearn Repeat

One thing that is going to be a basic need of future careers is learning and unlearning. As skills will be new and redundant at a faster pace. Continuous learning can be helpful.

First of all if it is your own company then talk to HR and find out whether there is vacancy in development and what are the qualification and requirements to work in development.

 

Second talk to people in development to find out whether you are a good fit to work in that department.

Third talk to your Boss about the possibility to working in develpment provided he is open minded and wants you to progress.

If you dont get any opportunity in your own organisation, apply in other organisations.
