The literal meaning of hedge is protective compound wall built around the house/ the property.

In trading & investment, Hedging is done to minimize the losses and protect the profit earned from fluctuation and volatility caused due to unexpected events in the market.

With proper hedging the risk is reduced to larger extent; without compromising much on the profits.

Without hedging, trader/ investor may incur big losses. When a trader lose in his trades, its not just the loss of money but also a big loss of trader's morale. So, hedge your open position and enjoy the peaceful trading.

Exit strategy is equally important for intra-day and positional trades; however in case of intra-day trading exit strategy plays crucial role as the time allocated for our trade to perform is limited and short.

Getting out of the trade when the final target is achieved is an ideal exit.

However the ideal is not practical and all the professional traders/ investors will agree on this point.

Speaking of a practical EXIT strategy, we must have following points covered:

1. Having a reasonable stop loss

2. Moving the stop loss in order to prevent trade from making any unreasonable loss

3. Trailing the stop loss to protect and maximize the profit.

All these points are elaborated below:

1. Having a reasonable stop loss:

The stop loss should not be too tight. The tight stop loss may ensure the smaller losses however the chances of hitting this kind of stop loss are higher. The stop loss should be wide enough so that it gives a proper room for the price to move. So concluding a reasonable stop loss is a crucial aspect of a successful trading.

For a reasonable stop loss, always practice the right entry. Too early entries in the trade can ensure the smaller stop losses however they come with higher risks to hit those stop losses frequently.

When the entry is well calculated, even though the stop loss is wider, the chances of hitting it are lesser.

2. Moving the stop loss in order to prevent trade from making any unreasonable loss:

Once the trade starts moving in your direction and gives conclusive closing confirmation (like closing above important pivot, support levels in case of bullish trade and in case of bearish trade closing below the important pivot, resistance levels) ; then by calculating a reasonable cushion for price movement, move your stop loss cost to cost or just above the cost. This will make sure that even though this stop loss is hit, your trade is not in the loss. This is the important step in the exit strategy.

3. Trailing the stop loss to protect and maximize the profit:

Premature exits often give notional and opportunity losses; giving us a guilt of early exits.

To mint money from your targets, as the trend keeps moving in your trade direction, keep trailing your stop loss to protect your existing profit and giving a chance to grow your future profits as the price moves towards the target.

Trailing the stop loss is the skill and it can be mastered with real time experience in the trading.

During last week, Bank Nifty index witnessed some correction in the initial couple of days. During mid-week, the index witnessed an up movement  but it faced resistance around 32000- 32200 and then its corrected in the end of the week to end with a weekly loss of 1.89 percent. During the end of the weak, the Bank Nifty too witnessed some selling pressure as the broader markets witnessed a sharp correction. The index has ended near its '20 DEMA  ; support and hence it would be good to see how its behaves around this support. The immediate resistance for the index is seen around 31500-31650 range and the index needs to surpass this to resume its momentum. A failure to do so could result into some further correction towards 31050 and 30800. However, the broader trend continues to be positive and this downmove should be seen as a correction within an uptrend which would provide good opportunities for positional traders to buy on dips. As of now, swing traders are advised to keep a wait and watch approach and look for developments as per above mentioned probabilities .

Why Stock Market?

Vallimanalan A.

I 10 years as an academician. Global and Indian Stock analyst.

“Stock market is like gambling; too risky and unnecessary for middle-class people like us” - this is what I was made to understand till 1st June 2009. Sitting at a cash counter of ICICI Bank Limited (Mill Road branch, Coimbatore) I lost a whopping Rs. 90000/-. Not in equity, commodity, F&O or any other stock market instrument but “HOT PHYSICAL CASH”. That was my first day at a cash counter as an employee of the bank. Starting at 9 am, I had handled around 300 customers for the day. End of the day my tally sheet was showing -90000. I thought something was wrong with the excel sheet. I tried correcting it, but then there was nothing to fix. I called in my senior to look at it, and his grim look said it all. I had lost Rs.90000/- in a single day (without investment). I had probably given away Rs.100000/- against a cheque of Rs.10000/-. That was too much to digest considering my salary itself at that time was Rs.84000/- per annum.

In the next few moments, all my colleagues gathered at the counter, each of them trying to find what happened. I was a bit cool, yup; the branch was under CCTV surveillance. After all the hue and cry, everyone agreed to watch the show on CCTV. Around 9.30 PM, with me taking center stage, everyone was waiting for a thriller. That’s when reality struck me hard. Shocking end to the thriller came when the movie ended even before it started. The whole branch was under the camera except the one counter where I was sitting. I had no other option than to pay it from myself and my pocket wasn’t that deep. Coming to terms with the situation was difficult. With Rs.90000/- missing, I was the prime suspect. I was questioned, bullied and was asked not to leave the branch premises until I pay for it. Around 2 am on 2nd June, and my father bailed me out. Till that date, I thought I have a career with India’s leading bank which will take care of me and reward me for the service I render. For obvious reasons, I could not sleep for days to come. It was not about Rs.90000/- but the whole idea of studies, job, salary and career. Everything looked fake to me. The bank premises felt like jail. Few thoughts kept lingering;

I was not into horse trading but was still under substantial loss.

I was not stealing but was still the prime suspect.

I was not arrested but was still waiting to be bailed out.

My colleagues did sympathise, yet it was painful. I became an example of a poor first-day show. It was so depressing to be at the receiving end of sympathy. Life taught me hard lessons. I realised anything is possible, and success is not guaranteed in any aspect of life. I understood that risk is a part of living and no job or career in this world is permanent.

I realised that it was the time I should develop a skill which will make me independent. I badly wanted an extra income and was ready to do anything for that. The fear of losing kept chasing me. There was no option to earn without risk. Every business needed investment upfront and many have lost their investment even in the most lucrative industry. I visited a few local shops in Coimbatore, looking for some business opportunity. The working hours of the bank did not allow me to do anything outside of it. I had to start something where I depend on myself alone. The only possible solution was the Stock Market. During the initial days of learning I asked a veteran investor:

Is it a cakewalk to earn by trading/investing in the stock market?

He said “No.”

Does one always make a profit??

Again “No”

He shot back with the same questions:

Do cake walk business models exist? Do businesses always run in profit?

Well, No!

I understood that it is all about managing risk. Instead of trying to avoid risk, learn to handle it. Risk never comes with a warning, and it is better to be prepared.

Do you know? Investment Vs Trading - Stock Market Advanced Technicals.

As per technical rules and trading ethics, Trading will highly risk basis earing. Sometime we will get profits, and Sometime we will get Loss. But Weekly 2 days or 3 days trading is the best opportunity, and they are professional traders.

For example, if you earned profits from Monday to Wednesday don't enter for next 2 days.

More profits will convert the mind to enter wrongly without technical knowledge. Some time will lock in news based markets.

If booked profits in Monday, Loss booked in Tuesday, so enter in Friday only for weekly closing markets.

Some rules will happen, some indicators and news will form the market in bull or bear mode.

If you want to earn some profits from markets, then enter for limited days only.

The investment will be a better option for earning purely from technical base calls.

it will be short-term, mid-term or long-term mode.

Brilliant Definition Of A Bank

A bank is a broker between the middle class and the rich. The only place where the two meet is in a bank. The middle class brings the money, through saving, and the rich take it, through borrowing. A middle-class person saves the money because they have more money than their thinking capacity. So they keep the money in the bank so they can go and think what to do with the money they saved.

On the other side, the rich come to pick that money, through borrowing, because they have more ideas than the money they have. On a practical side, please show me one billionaire who got rich through saving and I will show you a million Indians who have money saved in the banks and are still renting the houses that the millionaires and billionaires build through the substantial savings which the rich borrowed from a bank.

This one sure now got me thinking.

How often have we come across traders who have encountered losses after having entered into trades which were extremely profitable or traders who shy away from initiating or delay in placing trades even though the market indicators are suggesting so? How often have traders been very successful while trading demo accounts and performed quite the contrary while trading real- time accounts? How many times have we heard stories of traders who have wiped their trading accounts clean because they failed to cut losses?

All these questions lead to a larger debate; the characteristics and the role of trading psychology leading to a successful trader.

Trading psychology refers to a trader’s behavior or perception when actively trading the financial markets; A trader can either follow a set trading plan, irrespective of market conditions and external factors, which could ultimately lead to a high ratio of profitable trades and cutting losses short OR indecisive actions leading to trades not being initiated and profitable trades resulting in losses.

The attributes to successful trading is the ability in displaying the right psychology, keeping emotions in check as far as possible and following a pre- determined trading plan and not worry about the outcome in the near- term.

Traders ought to be open to new ideas and innovative thinking, even if they have developed successful trading systems, they should connect with other traders and exchange views which could be mutually beneficial.

Trading behavior is not limited to beginners, as even experienced traders often deviate from their set trading beliefs, resulting in their downfall at some point in time. The primary reason traders find it difficult to change their behavior could be the result of extreme or over confidence in their abilities or the lack of it, impatient in exiting a trade, while others could be governed by emotions such as greed and fear. The very few who make it are the ones who keep their emotions in check, follow the trading curve, day in and day out and are not affected by the factors mentioned earlier.

Trading in the financial markets is never easy and traders, both fresh and experienced will vouch for it. Trading is a skill and only those traders who are well prepared with a plan and go that extra mile in implementing them will be successful.
