Cycling or a language speaking skill, a skill needs to be learnt and practiced. While learning how to cycle you did not think your cycling skills were good or bad. You just learnt & practiced together. Apply this on your English speaking skills & you'll find that your skills are not bad.

Almost everybody feels the same way that you do. It is true. This is because of "failed expectations" from oneself and the lack of patience to move from level to level in a gradual manner. In acquiring any skill for that matter, one has to go through a tunnel of difficulties before one arrives at the goal. Talent is something money cannot buy. A good coach can teach you how to speak but your own passion will determine both the progress rate as well as your level of speaking skills. A coach SHOULD have a different approach with each student and make the student understand whether he/she is progressing or not. A monthly feedback will encourage the student to focus better on weak areas and further strengthen strong areas. However, in my experience, I have had students who showed passion and learned to speak well in about 6 to 9 months. Not all have the same grit and determination to reach their goal. So their English never improves beyond a particular level as they develop a "give up" attitude. I keep telling students that they should focus on consistent progress and not the goal when they are coaching. Many who did that have better speaking skills today and wish to continue coaching to improve further in their skills because they KNOW THEY ARE PROGRESSING.In short, Ms Soumya, your speaking skills are bad because you never developed a strong passion to acquire it, you haven't given it enough time, probably never coached under an able coach, and maybe never practiced enough on a regular basis. Change your approach on these and you definitely will get better and better over time. Good luck and best wishes. read less
