In English an idiom means the use of figurative language in the group of words ie a phrase. The meaning is entirely differfrom the literal meaning of those words

To native English speaker would probably not even be aware of what and idiom is. A figure of speech for added effect rather than literally what you would do, that's an idiom. Over the moon with excitement for example.
