Difference in definition: Asleep = in or into a state of sleep. Sleep = Temporary suspension of consciousness and postural muscle relaxation. A kind of inactive rest for the body. Difference in usage: Sleep is frequently though both words are used interchangeably depending upon the context that comes handy in speech. Eg.: Fall asleep vs go to sleep.
