Adverbs of Manner, Place, and Time (MPT Rule)
Mantra: Manner → Place → Time (with flexibility for emphasis)
- Manner (How?) – Describes how an action is done.
- Usually placed after the verb or object.
- Example: “She spoke clearly.” / “He solved the problem efficiently.”
- Place (Where?) – Describes where the action happens.
- Usually comes after the verb or object, before time if present.
- Example: “I looked everywhere.” / “She is waiting at the park.”
- Time (When?) – Describes when the action happens.
- Usually placed at the end, sometimes at the beginning for emphasis.
- Example: “We will meet tomorrow.” / “Yesterday, I visited my friend.”
General Rule:
- When all three types appear together, the normal order is Manner → Place → Time.
- ✅ “He answered politely (manner) at the office (place) yesterday (time).”
- However, different orders are used for emphasis:
- “Yesterday, he answered politely at the office.” → emphasizes when.
- “He at the office politely answered yesterday.” → emphasizes where and how.
